US Executive Director

We are excited to be recruiting our next US Executive Director (ED) to guide HFL into the next chapter of our story and mission. The US ED will report directly  to the Board of Directors, and will be empowered with overall strategic and operational responsibility for Hope For Life’s US based staff, programs, fundraising, and execution of its mission.

Leadership & Management

  • Partner with the Board of Directors in the design and creation of annual and 3-year strategic plans that include clear priorities, goals, and budgets.
  • Oversee implementation of organization strategy, including maintaining an annual operational plan, provide organizational oversight, and hold responsibility for achieving organization’s objectives.
  • Build and develop an effective team of employees to execute strategy; foster a culture of excellence and support so staff are growing as professionals and thriving.
  • Manage the organization’s financial function in cooperation with the finance team to produce financial reports including annual budgets, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports (including cash flow monitoring), 990 submission, and financial procedures, to ensure financial stability and growth.
  • Coordinate regularly with global partners, staying informed of programmatic progress, opportunities for improvement, and remaining aware of local and international events impacting our partners. 
  • Act as support and advocate for global partners, especially related to strategic planning, programmatic monitoring and evaluation, and financial management. Provide accountability for shared goals and expectations.
  • Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the financial, directional and internal health of the organization.
  • Cultivate a positive and supportive environment of mutual respect, healthy boundaries, organizational effectiveness, clear communication, and operationalization of organization’s core values.


  • Effectively grow relationships with HFL’s key stakeholders including global partners, board members, community partners, donors, staff, volunteers, and the broader community. 
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Development Director in overseeing the annual development plan to ensure the organization has the resources it needs to achieve its goals.
  • Support global partners with their annual budgets and funding requests.
  • Advocate on behalf of the organization, including speaking engagements with partner events, churches, and HFL events.
  • Ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed by HFL and by any global partner. 
  • Visit Rwanda at least annually for relationship building, program oversight, and to lead donor Learning Trips.
  • Lead strategy, acquisition, and reporting for all grants. 
  • Assist in leading elements of the annual Gala or other fundraising events.


  • Ensure the administration of funds is in accordance with the budget approved by the Board of Directors.
  • Manage Human Resource responsibilities including but not limited to leading payroll processes, overseeing professional development, sustaining HR policies and procedures, and monitoring strategy and reporting of cash flow and funding gaps.
  • Lead organizational operationalization of anti-racism commitment and dismantling of inequity in organization practices and policies.
  • Ensure the organization remains in compliance with federal and state licensing. 
  • Support Board committees as needed.


The ED will be committed to HFL’s mission. All candidates should have proven leadership, cross-cultural, and management experience. Other requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in non-profit management or related field.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and management skills; a strong interest in engaging staff in collaborative decision-making processes.
  • Experience and demonstrated success in fundraising, budget management, donor cultivation, and donor retention.
  • Ability to skillfully manage diverse responsibilities and set achievable goals in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to Rwanda minimum of once per year.


  • Familiarity with the history and culture of Rwanda.
  • Experience with grassroots organizations.
  • Familiarity with accounting software and online database management (Quickbooks, Excel, CRM).

Salary & Benefits
  • Starting salary range is $75,000 -$95,000
  • Health Insurance plan (available after 1 month)
Paid Time Off
  • Sick and safe leave is accrued at 1 hr. per 40 hrs. worked in accordance with WA state policy
  • 15 days of annual paid vacation
  • 13 set days of paid holidays off, flexibility to observe alternate holidays
